War Beetle

9/11/2012. The Wheatcroft Collection - Donington Park - UK

This is my last offering from the collection and it is probably the rarest WW2 vehicle at Donington.
Designed by Ferdinand Porsche in 1933 under orders from Hitler as a cheap means of transport for a family of 2 adults and 3 children. It was available to citizens of the Third Reich through a savings scheme. Cost 990 Reichmarks. Weekly wage 32 Reichmarks.

Known as the KdF- (Kraft durch Freude = Strength through Joy) wagen. This was the biggest con perpetrated on the German public. Not one person received a vehicle through this scheme. They all went to the armed forces!
