The original Chieftain AVRE idea came from a Royal Engineer unit in Germany as the Centurion AVRE's were too slow to keep up with the battle group.
On a self help basis they took the turret off a Chieftain gun tank and added a framework to support a number of pipe fascines or Class 60 trackway.
Having proved the concept the MOD hierarchy were convinced that the Engineers required more such conversions and the design was formalised by Vickers in 1989.
Over the next few years a purpose built conversion was produced that included a new super-structure, a winch with a 10 Tonne capacity and an Atlas hydraulic crane and provision on the front of the hull to fit a full width mine plough.
I understand that this is one of vehicles converted to the Vickers design by 23 Base Workshop REME in Germany between 1992 and 1994.
