UAZ-452 Minibus/Ambulance

UAZ-452 Minibus/Ambulance Kazakhstan August 2004.
The UAZ-452 is widespread throughout the Former Soviet Union. It is often used at unit level, as here, as an ambulance. In this instance, it is displaying the Red Crescent.

Possibly it is an Islamic influence of the usage of the "Moon and Crescent" symbolism as practiced by ambulances (even Military ambulances) at Malaysia and Brunei.

The red crescent is I understand, an islamic symbol of absaloute mercy and neutrality, it can be seen on ambulance vehicles in countries of islamic influence. Given that the St John's red cross originated at the time of the cruseades, Muslims would perhaps have found its use offensive, and so an equivilent symbol from islamic culture is used instead. Any further information would be welcome I think.
