Challenger 1 & Khalid

Added by Paul on 07 June 2011.
Hi Paul,
Is the Khalid and Al-Kahlid one and the same tank?
If I look at pictures on the internet, I see that the connection between the barrel and the turret (don't know the technical name) are totally different from the Al-Khalid.

Khalid is an improved Chieftain and a completely different machine to the Al-Khalid which was a Pakistani tank. Paul

Khalid was not built by Vickers-Armstrong. It was built at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Barnbow, Leeds in an order for 283 placed by Jordan. It began life as the 2nd phase of the FV4030 programme to develop MBTs for the Imperial Iranian Army, where it would have been known as Shir 1. The fall of the Shah saw the cancellation of the Iranian order and the fundamental design was adopted by Jordan as the Khalid. It combined the turret and front hull of a late-mark Chieftain with the rear hull and automotives including the track of what would have been Shir 2 and what was used in Challenger 1.
