This is the DUKW also know as the 'Duck'. They were built during WW2. 21, 147 of these were built in 1942. There are many of these still in use in the United States taking tourists on trips in the water.

It was actually based on the GMC 6x6 chassis used on the 2.1/2t truck .The Name comes from the Following designator code:

D = 1942
U = utility
K = all-wheel drive
W = 2 powered rear axles

It had a 6-cylinder engine producing 94bhp, and could manage 80 km/h (road), 10 km/h (water).
Some 21, 000 were built. It was also copied by the Russians (BAV ?). One is still in use (or was until recently) by the Royal Navy, and the almost 200 vehicles used by Germany were disposed of in 1965.
